Charities & Trusts

Our charities specialist advisor has experience in advising charities that are Trusts, Companies Limited by Guarantee or Industrial and Provident Societies. He is conversant with the different requirements of those registered in Scotland or in England and Wales - currently we number amongst our clients seven Scottish charities and nine English charities. He is able to advise on all aspects of charitable finance and in particular the following key areas:

Investment policy
All charities that have investment funds have an obligation under the Trustees Investment Act to have an investment policy and to seek financial advice as to how best to realise such a policy.  We can assist you in formulating and drawing up your policy and advise in its implementation.  For example the portfolio structure of your investments would clearly need to be very different were you in need of regular income than if your requirement is capital growth.

Ethical investment policy statement
It is now a legal requirement for English and Welsh charities to make a statement as to whether they have an ethical investment policy and, if they do, what it is.  In Scotland it is best practice to do this.  In either case we are able to assist charities in meeting these obligations.

Independent financial advice

Charity trustees in the UK have an overriding obligation to the beneficiaries of their charity and, it is essential when they invest their charity’s funds, that they make sure they get the best return possible.  Investing ethically in no way needs to compromise this responsibility so long as the Trustees take appropriate financial advice in the selection of the fund manager.  In fact, there are ethical investment specialist fund managers who are likely to provide a better performance than their non-ethical main stream managers.  With our advice and help you can do the best for your beneficiaries and show your regulator that you are more than meeting your obligations.  Finding such a manager needs expertise and experience like ours.

Our charities advisor, in a private capacity, is currently a charity trustee of a Scottish charity and of two English charities.

Employee benefits

Apart from investment advice we also advise charities in both England and Wales and Scotland on employee benefits, in particular pensions. For further information about all aspects click on Employee benefits »
